Cocker
Spaniel owners know too well the heartbreak of chronic ear infections.
Those long ears may look great in dog shows with silky flowing
hair, but inside can be a haven for pesky mites and the general “gunk”
that creates infections. Lynne
Smith of Sherman Oaks has kept her two cockers’ ears clean since
learning of a “swimmer’s ear” formula.
Lynn’s
“wonderful little girls” Puddin’ (the blonde one) and Ashley
(the red one) had been plagued by ear infections until she used
this formula after getting the last infection successfully
treated. According to
“The Wellness Encyclopedia” from the editors of the UC
Berkeley “Wellness Letter,” “swimmer’s ear” in humans is
a painful, itchy infection of the external ear canal which
develops after long periods of swimming or bathing.
Lynne
credits the treatment recommendation as keeping her dog’s ears
clean for more than five years: “Insert
one or two drops of a one part white vinegar and one part rubbing
alcohol mixture into each ear and let them remain there for thirty
seconds. Before
inserting, warm the drops to body temperature by holding the
container in your hand for a few minutes.
This solution will restore the normal acid balance of the
canals as well as help dry it out. People who are sensitive to alcohol can substitute water.” Lynne
notes that she prefers the water-vinegar combination as less
drying, but the alcohol-vinegar combination might help when first
starting to use it. She
has used it once a week for years and her pets have had happy
hearing since. “One
expert estimates that vinegar/alcohol drops cure 80 percent of ear
infections,” according to “The Wellness Encyclopedia.” |
